It has been evaluated that 321,047 gallons of moderate evaluation fuel and 18,000 gallons of diesel fuel were lost in this catastrophe. The numbers are far not exactly the eleven million gallons that were lost in the oil slick of the Exxon Valdese in 1989, yet the result of this spill is carrying demolition to the territory. The establishing site for the boat is a refuge for some, ocean feathered creatures and marine warm blooded animals. It is situated in part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. This territory is frequented by Stellar Sea Lions, Stellar Elders, and Aleutian Sea Otters. These species are viewed as jeopardized, and this is creating an untamed life issue in that regard. In excess of 1,600 feathered creatures have been affirmed dead from the mishap as of now. Oil has been found on bald eagles and on the hide of red foxes. Trouble has shown up for researchers who are attempting to inspect the natural effects of the oil slick. The issues are originating from the furious climate, deceptive landscape, remoteness of area, and absence of sunlight because of the winter light time in Alaska. Extra investigations are expected to decide the quantities of fowls executed and the species that are included. A portion of the Alaskan sea shores have up to four feet of soybeans stacked along their shoreline. The Selendang Ayu was shipping 60,198 metric huge amounts of soybeans to China. The team individuals were for the most part emptied. Be that as it may, six individuals were murdered during salvage endeavors when a huge wave caused the Coast Guard salvage helicopter to crash. ... <!

They were the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Declaratory Act, Townshend Act, Quartering Act, Tea Act, the Boston Tea Party, and Coercive Acts. One of the first charges put on the settlements by Britain was the Sugar Act. The Sugar Act of 1764 was to fund-raise to assist Parliament with running the settlements. This demonstration put an assessment on products, for example, molasses, espresso, and sugar. It additionally expected shippers to have a nitty gritty diagram of their cargoes. Dealers could likewise be attempted in office of the chief naval officer courts. Whenever indicted, the wrongdoers lost both the freight and the boat that conveyed it. Most pioneers accepted they should just be burdened by an administration they had chosen. They didn't care for this imposing taxes without any political benefit. The Stamp Act was then passed to help fund-raise to run the states. The Stamp Act was passed by Parliament in March 1765. This Act burdened the utilization of pieces of literature, for example, deeds, marriage licenses, commercials, papers, confirmations, customs reports and in any event, playing a game of cards. Numerous provincial congregations were against this tax assessment and composed petitions requesting the annulment of this demonstration. The principal open obstruction were riots brought about by the Sons of Liberty who had faith in real life instead of talk. In this way, Parliament canceled this Act and afterward passed the Declaratory Act The Declaratory Act was an announcement of intensity. It said the settlers were heavily influenced by Parliament and they could pass any law they needed. This Act didn't settle the issue of tax imposition without any political benefit. The Effects of Sleep Deprivation - Free Essay Example

The effects of sleep deprivation (SD) have been studied for over a century and are not only limited to cognitive deficits but whole body deterioration as well. Research has shown that the body reacts to sleep deprivation by affecting gene expression, cellular responses in organs and tissues, and overall homeostatic balance. These result in leaving the body with a greatly increased chance for contracting life threatening illnesses. Many studies have been done on animals and humans to further gain a deeper understanding to the many biological effects caused by sleep deprivation. The Center for Disease Control conducted a census for the United States population concerning sleep duration, which showed that 34.9% to 35.5% of adults over the age of 18 in 2014 slept less than 7 hours a night (Sleep-CDC, 2017). This means that a little over a third of Americans are in a state of chronic sleep deprivation. To understand sleep deprivation and its effects, the basic concept of the sleep cycle and what occurs throughout it must be understood. There are four stages of non rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep followed by one stage of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep totals to five total necessary stages of sleep. The brains neuron ability to integrate new memories into long term memories is primarily done in the NREM stages. According to the National Sleep Foundation, during the fourth NREM stage, known as the restorative stage, the body repairs muscles and tissues, stimulates growth and development, boosts immune function, and builds up energy for the next day (Robbins, 2015). The REM stage of sleep contributes mostly to brain consolidation and information processing, which in turn contributes to learning and memory operations. Two internal biological processes work together to regulate sleep and wake states. They are known as circadian rhythm and sleep-wake homeostasis. Circadian rhythm impacts hormone release, body temperature, digestion, and sleep cycles among other functions. Sleep-wake homeostasis regulates the bodys primal need for sleep by adjusting substances such as adenosine that build up in the cerebrospinal fluid, and that increases with each hour a person is awake, only to be alleviated to lower levels when sleeping takes place (2). Researchers who conducted a review on the neurobiological consequences of sleep deprivation covered a plethora of issues as sleep deprivation relates to brain function, learning and memory, neurogenesis, inflammatory responses, and cognition related signaling molecules. On the review of brain function as well as learning and memory, past research has shown that as the body continually seeks to reinstate homeostasis by attempting to sleep during forced consciousness, the stress to the system becomes an allostatic load. (Alkadhi, 2013) This is a negative physiological ramification of repeated exposure to stress on the body, causing damage to the various systems within. The allostatic load can cause a modification in the location of the set point for the engagement of homeostasis. When this point is not where it should be, the structural and functional brain regions that are involved in memory can be altered. An allostatic load exposed to the body for a long period of time can lead to b odily breakdown and disease resulting in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other illnesses (Alkadhi, 2013). Sleep deprivation inhibits neurogenesis and the brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) by the stress it projects onto the bodys system and brain. BDNF is a protein produced in nerve cells and is one of the most active neurotrophins that stimulate and control neurogenesis, cognition, and neuronal plasticity. Cognition deficits exacerbate the brains abilities for mood regulation, which leads to anxiety, depression, and anger. Compromises in immune system function have also been found in sleep deprived individuals. Not only is the bodys immune system subject to suppression, resulting in decreased ability to fight off bacterial attacks, but findings also show elevations in cytokine secretions resulting in an increased inflammatory response throughout the body. A study done on measuring the levels of cellular and genomic markers of inflammation related to increased cytokine responses of sleep deprived individuals by several renowned scholars has shown a 3-fold increase in transcription of interleukin 6 messenger RNA and a 2-fold increase in tumor necrosis factor ? ± messenger RNA (Irwin et al, 2006). Their findings proved that sleep loss altered the molecular activities that propel cellular immune initiation and induced inflammatory cytokines. Unregulated inflammatory mechanisms can greatly increase risk for cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, and metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. Endocrine organs that are affected by sleep deprivation experience increases and decreases in hormones that help regulate the body. The thyroid stimulating hormone that regulates metabolism decreases while levels of the human growth hormone increase. These high levels of HGH impact glucose tolerance and lead to anti-insulin effects where the body has issues absorbing glucose in the blood. The pituitary gland releases hormones that direct the release of other hormones from the peripheral endocrine glands. This ability is greatly influenced by sleep where pituitary dependent hormones react to sleep deprivation by increasing cortisol and promoting insulin resistance. During the absence of sleep, the body decreases leptin, the appetite suppressing hormone, and increases ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite. These unregulated hormones lead to the risk of obesity and diabetes. Sleep deprivation alters gene expression in numerous areas in the body. There are two major steps in gene expression. One is transcription, which is the process of copying DNA to make RNA. The other process is translation, which is the process of interpreting the RNA into proteins to perform other functions within the cell. Eryn Brown reviewed a recent study done by genomist, Colin Smith, on gene expression and sleep deprivation, it was found that a total of 711 genes were affected by SD in the encoding process. These genes had changes in their rhythmic patterns of on and off timing meaning that their normal activity was either intensified or reduced. About 444 genes were turned down while 267 were amped up. Resulting in an unbalanced regulation and ultimately an alteration of genes (Brown, 2013). Findings showed that the majority of the genes affected were involved in metabolism, gene regulation, stress responses, and regulating sleep homeostasis. When gene regulating genes are aff ected, a domino effect is created causing numerous negative changes in many areas of the body. In conclusion, sleep is a crucial component for the body for various reasons. Sleep is critical for restoring homeostasis within the body. Once sleep deprivation takes place, the body undergoes a severe stress reaction that it continually seeks to overthrow. Internal systems start to malfunction and an absence of necessary activities within the body start causing damage. This damage can include issues regarding hormone release that affect appetite, disruptions in the sleep cycle, negative immune responses, and difficulties in brain function, and altering gene expression regulations within the body. Sleep is also very important for information processing and the consolidation of memories. The body needs to go through the stages of NREM and REM sleep to initiate neuronal activity and repair for muscles and tissues in the body, as well as to regulate various hormones that affect digestion, blood glucose levels, inflammatory responses, and cognition stimulation. Cardiovascular, neurodege nerative, and metabolic diseases can also affect the body if equilibrium is not reinstated. Risk for cancer, arthritis, and severe mood changes are more prominent for sleep deprived individuals as well. Changes on a cellular level make the concept of sleep deprivation more complicated than just feeling tired. The different systems within the body continually fight for stability and when the fight is lost and sleep is continually prevented, alterations throughout the body take place. Therefore, sleep is a vital component in keeping the intricate inner workings of the body in proper functioning order. Works Cited Robbins, McLean. Understanding Sleep Cycles. The skill of questioning has a long history and is a part of every makeup of every human living on Earth. The result of any inquisition can show that the individual of any society is not fully the same as his co-inhabitor. People can have different definitions about what makes a happy life. Society vs. Heart in Mark Twains Huckleberry Finn Essay

Society vs. Heart in Mark Twains Huckleberry Finn Ernest Hemmingway once described a novel by Mark Twain as, â€Å"†¦it is the ‘one book’ from which ‘all modern American literature’ came from† (Railton). This story of fiction, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is a remarkable story about a young boy growing up in a society that influences and pressures people into doing the so-called â€Å"right thing.† It is not very difficult to witness the parallels between the society Huck has grown up in and the society that influences the choices of people living today. However, what is it that gives society the power to draw guidelines to define the norms, trends, and what is morally right and wrong in life? Is it always the best choice to listen†¦show more content†¦The Widow Douglas and Miss Watson, sisters who adopt Huck, have a slave by the name of Jim who, on the outside, appears to be both unintelligent and foolish, as by the impression received when Jim first speaks, â€Å"Who da h?† (Twain 6). In the beginning of the novel, Huck’s views on slavery had been skewed by society and by the civilized Miss Watson’s righteous and moral views. Huck finds it all fun and games when he and his comrade, Tom Sawyer, play a trick on Jim; Tom Sawyer and Huck remove Jim’s hat from his head and place it on the branch above him. When Jim wakes up, he believes he has been bewitched, adding to his dim-witted and brainless appearance. Only later on in the novel does Huck realize what Jim really means to him. On Huck and Jim’s journey to Cairo, Jim begins to speak about when he is free he will go and find his children and take them from the slave owner. This rubbed Huck the wrong way; his standards of Jim had been lowered because, from Huck’s point of view, why would Jim steal his children away from a man who has done nothing to him? Huck’s conscience began to come into play and he had made up his mind: He was going to turn Jim in when they reach shore. He was sure of it until Jim began to sweet talk Huck, telling him that Huck was the only white man that had ever kept a promise to him. Taking a Look at Wind Energy - 525 Words

Wind is the movement from and area of high pressure to and area of low pressure. The only reason wind exist is because the sun does not heat the earth evenly. As the hot air rise cool air rise cool air will take its place. While our sun still shines wind will also blow, and as the wind is blowing people will always use it as a source of energy. Black Identity free essay sample

As I was taking the SAT a week ago, I came across an essay question: Discuss the word Identity. Identity is a very hard topic to discuss. Identity is a state of mind that many people still do not have a firm grasp on. It’s even harder for black people. Growing up in an unjustly, limiting society, black people probably have it the hardest. Most blacks do not even know any of their history before slavery, much less as history during slavery. Because of this, black people believe in the unjust society and try to dress, talk and think like the dominant group (in this case white people). For instance, black women choose to perm their hair to fit in society. Also, black males choose to leave their hair very low to neglect their Afro. Black people have fallen victim to society. My stance is that black people need to exclude their mainstream influences and stay true to themselves. There are many reasons why this should be. Firstly, black people are internally not living for themselves. They would follow what the dominant group thinks of them and follow. Secondly, black people are neglecting their values. Black people do not know the special qualities we have. Finally, white people, or any other dominant group will never respect you if you follow them. If you were yourself, they would see you as a legitimate human being. Ever since I was young, I’ve always seen black women with such style and grace. However, I’ve always wondered why so many of them perm their hair. I always though to myself, â€Å"wow, those women had beautiful hair. Why did they do that to themselves?† That was before I grew up and knew that black women do it for a reason. They do it because they feel they won’t fit in. Black people do it because when they were young they were taught that their features were not as good as white people. It’s funny that as little girls, black women have their hair natural. But when they get older black girls perm their hair, as if this type of hair is a sign of maturity. For black men it’s the same thing. They rather leave their hair very low to produce waves. That is just a less strong form of the perm. Every time they go into a â€Å"mature function†(such as banquets, important parties, etc.) they have to match it with â€Å"mature hair†. Bla ck people for some reason want to have straight hair to match the hair of white people. They refer to their own hair as nappy. First of all, the word nappy is an English word, which means filth or stinky baby diapers. This is in no correlation to the texture or look of black hair. The same conundrum goes for the way black people wear their clothes. Some actually believe perfect attire for black people is a suit and tie. Black people need to have connection to their history. Before, black people wore long thin garments, with African designs. Since their skin is thick and receives the sun more, polyester clothing like a suit would suffocate their skin. Also, the black hair has many benefits. Before I get in to the discussion, I have to talk about coils or curls. Anything that coils receives more energy. For instance, our Milky Way Galaxy is spiral and therefore receives light and electrical energy. Also, wires for phones are meant to be curly for electricity to run through. From this information, black people should leave their hair natural. If they don’t have this hair, the sun energy will be messed up and they will never live a pure life. Hair is a symbol for who you are. For many centuries, hair symbolizes beauty and personality. These are the two maj or qualities of giving in to the dominant culture. You will think that you were not as beautiful and your whole personality would change to fit the culture. Many people have been brainwashed to think that a natural lifestyle without designer clothes and permed hair is impossible. There is a life of fulfillment, such as acting the way you want to act. It’s okay to learn about your own history. You can blend European history with your own and see the connection. I see in a lot of people’s faces that they don’t look fully happy. They are missing something: a part of themselves. They worry too much on what the dominant culture is doing that they forget about their own needs. I guarantee that if you like your normal real self, people would see the good in you. They would respect you for who you are. Sometimes, people would get scared if their accent does not match the European culture’s accent. If you express your culture in a true way, other people would see your culture really matters. They won’t assume that your culture isn’t important, and they would want to learn more. Many people would think, boy, why would you try to distance yourself from everybody? Everyone should speak the same way. People who have accents should lose them. A lot of black women would argue that perming their hair is the only way they can get lobs or succeed in life. You can’t walk in a prestigious working area with an afro or with locks. They also might argue that their hair is too hard to handle. A perm is much easier to fix in the morning. Black people would not agree with the African garments. They live in a European society, so they have to dress accordingly. Also, the weather is different in Africa. European societies have a colder weather and a suit would keep them warm. Black Americans are not familiar with that type of wear. Why wear something you’ve never worn before to work when you can wear your own garments to work. To many people, hair is not a big deal. They can cut it and grow it back, and do the same thing over again. ‘It’s just hair ’, people would say. If we exclude all of the negative influences that certain things are better than others, we would have a positive life. I’m not saying to completely neglect the European influence. However, we should not forget the African influences we had before the European influences. The former represents who we are. It becomes much more beautiful if we blend both strong points from each to make a powerful us. To those who disagree, can you challenge your situation? Can you change the way you look and think? Or do you have a one-track mind? What are we as people? It’s not good if that is the only way you can succeed and advance in life. Stay true to yourself, and somebody might actually respect you. From the words of Malcolm X Back during slavery, when Black people like me talked to the slaves, they didnt kill em, they sent some old house Negro along behind him to undo what he said. You have to read the history of slavery to understand this. There were two kinds of Negroes. There was that old house Negro and the field Negro. And the house Negro always looked out for his master. When the field Negroes got too much out of line, he held them back in check. He put em back on the plantation. The house Negro could afford to do that because he lived better than the field Negro. He ate better, he dressed better, and he lived in a better house. He lived right up next to his master in the attic or the basement. He ate the same food his master ate and wore his same clothes. And he could talk just like his master good diction. And he loved his master more than his master loved himself. Thats why he didnt want his master hurt. If the master got sick, hed say, Whats the matter, boss, we sick? [Laughter] When the mast ers house caught afire, hed try and put the fire out. He didnt want his masters house burned. He never wanted his masters property threatened. And he was more defensive of it than the master was. That was the house Negro. But then you had some field Negroes, who lived in huts, had nothing to lose. They wore the worst kind of clothes. They ate the worst food. And they caught hell. They felt the sting of the lash. They hated their master. Oh yes, they did. If the master got sick, theyd pray that the master died. If the masters house caught afire, theyd pray for a strong wind to come along. This was the difference between the two. And today you still have house Negroes and field Negroes. Im a field Negro.

Writing Essays On Concrete Examples

Writing Essays On Concrete ExamplesWhen it comes to the topic of essays, you should be able to think about a particular area of your writing that has nothing to do with the subject of the essay. One of these areas is about concrete examples. This is not just about facts and figures, but also being able to write about concrete situations. Here are some concrete examples to help you out.Landscaping is an important part of a homeowner's landscape. Whether you are going to discuss plants, landscapes, trees, or other features, being able to write about concrete examples will come in handy. These concrete examples can range from basic facts and figures to things that could not have been seen by anyone except for you. As you can see, when writing about concrete examples, you should really go over them and try to remember as much as possible about what happened before and after the specific incident. One of the first concrete examples you should consider when writing your essay is something t hat is happening right now. Any type of concrete example can be very useful. Many times, people who were driving their cars in a different state will not have seen this happening, but you can include a concrete example in your essay. This example can be anything from the effect that the weather will have on the weather, to something that might happen that is more complex. It is important that you learn as much as possible before writing the essay, so take some time and be sure to think about what might happen in the future.Another way that you can use concrete examples is if you are writing about an event that happened in the past. You may have already experienced this, but when you are writing about the event, you may want to include a concrete example in the body of your essay. For example, if you were talking to someone from someone else's life, you can look at the concrete examples and see what happened before and after it happened. When you are writing about concrete examples, youare not just focusing on how things came about, but rather on the impact that the event had on the others involved.Of course, there are many more concrete examples that you can write about, depending on the type of essay you are writing. While you are thinking about concrete examples, remember that you can find them in many ways. One of these ways is through word of mouth, where you are having conversations with others about concrete examples. When you talk to someone about concrete examples, they are able to see the real effects that the event had on those who were affected by it. If you are unsure of how to go about this, think about how much you know about people and how much you know about their experiences. You can make up stories about how things have affected you and others around you and then choose concrete examples to get some insight into the concrete world. After you have written about concrete examples for a while, you will see a picture of the concrete world and you will be able to see everything that it can mean. All in all, when you are writing your essay, think about concrete examples. As you continue to learn more about concrete examples, you will be able to incorporate them into your essays more, and you will be able to think about different situations in your essays.

Analyzing the Similarities between “Hymn to the Aton” and “Psalm 104” Essay Example for Free (#104)

Analyzing the Similarities between â€Å"Hymn to the Aton† and â€Å"Psalm 104† Essay The thought that two different works of art written by authors of different countries, different backgrounds, living eight hundred years apart and centering on religion—more [specifically] their portrayal of God and how he is like the sun—[being similar] would [be] deem[ed] [as] impossible [or not likely by many]. [However,] the poems [â€Å"]Hymn to the Aton[† by Akhenaton] and [â€Å"]Psalm 104[† by David are examples of] this very occurrence. [Some scholars assert] that either the latter was copied from the former or that these two works are the result of a cultural split, [due to the] vast difference of [similar] elements [and subject matter that the poems share. ] the poems were fostered within, their similarities in content, and that the poems could not have been creative coincidence. The benefits in understanding that these works have some connection, whether by plagiarism or cultural dissect, provides scholars with more knowledge about the world we live in, helps to decipher some of the myths and mysteries of other cultures with similarities and shows the public all cultures may not be as different from each other as we think, helps to show that propaganda has been used since the earliest of times, and that if societies do not document their findings or creations people will eventually circle back and rediscover them. Collectively, if applied to the modern world, these benefits will advances in many fields of academia and help society at large to become more critical thinkers and problem solvers. [Based on your body paragraphs, I have simplified your thesis map to the following:] [The three clearest similarities of the two poems include their similar discussion of the power of the sun or the notion of the sun as a symbol for the power of God, the similarities of the daily activities of the two cultures and their link to their God, and the emphasis of monotheism.] [Now, provide one or two sentences that explain what current societal issue can be resolved or lessened through the realization of the similarity of these two poems.] The contrast between Hymn to the Aton and Psalm 104 are numerous. Hymn was written by Pharaoh Amenhotep IV around 1300 B.C.E. in order to help support his efforts to convert all of Egypt to monotheism and worship of the Sun, which called Aton. [First, it is uncanny the manner in which both poets use the sun as a point of reference for their God]. In [â€Å"Hymn to the Aton† Akhenaton proclaims] the actual Sun [as] god. â€Å"Thou living Aton the beginning of life!†¦Creator of seed in women, Thou who makes fluid into man, Who maintainest the son in the womb of this mother..† In the psalm, King David writes how God created the sun [to] reflect His greatness. [Provide a quote from â€Å"Psalm 104† that shows David discussing the sun.] â€Å"LORD my God, you are very great; you are clothe with splendor and majesty†¦ But at your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of your thunder they took flight†. King David’s poem was written about eight hundred years after the hymn and David does not mention much about himself, instead he praises the Lord. â€Å"I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.† Based on the time and purpose of these poems, they could not have been coincidence, that the poems are similar, there had to have been a purposeful connection between them. [While there are slight variations of how the sun is used, in both poems the writers explain how the sun meets the needs of the people and how that act is a symbol of the greatness and goodness of God.] Understanding this connection helps us to discover more and develop our perception about the world around us. [How so? Explain how it can benefit one group of people to be able to realize similarities with another group of people with whom they have historically seen no connection.] [Next, both poems] list almost identical daily activities in the exact order throughout the works. â€Å"[Provide quotes from both poems.]† Many of these [similarities] seem to be paraphrased and suggest that these writing come from the same source like two eye witness accounts of the same crime. After understanding the differences in the author’s cultures, religions, and time periods these similarities support the claim that the works are connected either by plagiarism or cultural split. This helps [readers] to realize that many cultures may not be as different from one another as [people often] think. [Yes, and how can this realization help our culture or society? What societal issue or problem can be solved or lessened with this realization?] Based upon detailed examination [of] the similarities of the [poems, many scholars assert that the shared elements, especially the support of monotheism, are not] by coincidence. [Provide a quote supporting monotheism from both poems.] Some researchers suggest that Hebrews fleeing from Egypt before the time of Moses, some of them wondered into temples where the hymn was written, and has the walked along the hymn was one songs they sang and it was carried throughout the generations, but not that the psalm is not a plagiarism of the hymn, this only leaves the notion that there was a cultural split. We are not sure at this point how the works are linked, [While scholars disagree on which group influenced the other into embracing monotheism, it is clear that a cultural exchange occurred between the two groups. Thus, this realization of the similarity is another example for scientists and anthropologists showing that cultures have always exchanged ideas. This exchange of ideas becomes even more interesting when we realize that the Jews were enslaved by the Egyptians.] but it could definitely give more light and support to how scientist and anthropologist other academic researchers and make strides in their fields, help us to understand how cultures are linked across the board. [Explain how discovering that these two ancient cultures exchanged ideas can provide a blueprint or inspiration for current cultures and how that blueprint or inspiration can help those cultures solve or lessen a current societal issue.] After deep analysis s of these two poems it is clear that one is either copied from the other or [that there was some mutual exchange of cultural ideas] at some point in history. [Using the two poems to realize this occurrence] helps historians and scientists to make deductions about connections [to] other cultures, [allowing more people to better understand the surrounding world]. [Yes, now explain how society can improve if more people are able to understand and connect to the surrounding world or the people surrounding them Analyzing the Similarities between â€Å"Hymn to the Aton† and â€Å"Psalm 104†. (2017, Feb 04).

Gender and Sexualiy in Italian Community of Vancouver Personal Statement

Gender and Sexualiy in Italian Community of Vancouver - Personal Statement Example degree in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia, where I am currently completing the International Graduate Study Preparation Program (IGSPP). My educational background has provided the theoretical framework for a career in anthropology through the Bachelor Degree in Cultural Anthropology (Major in Faculty of Arts) secured from the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Italy, from September 2004 to July 2007. Due to the immense interest and orientation to different aspects of culture and society that exhibit patterned interrelationships and trends, I delved into a Master’s Degree in Methodology of Research in Anthropology (Major in Faculty of Arts) from theUniversity of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy, from September 2007 to April 2010. During these academic experiences, I was given the opportunity to visit other universities as part of the exchange student programs. I have travelled and shared educational experiences with students from the Universidad Aut onoma de Madrid and the University of Technology of Sydney (UTS). The rich and varied exposure to diverse people, places, and cultures with utterly multifarious facets and orientations has prepared me to embrace an open-minded stance in understanding anthropology as an integrative interdisciplinary field of endeavor. As clearly depicted in the University of Florida’s published discourse about anthropology, I recognized the profession â€Å"with its holistic perspective, (that) intersects the multiple approaches to the study of humankind – biological, social, cultural, historical, linguistic, cognitive, material, technological, affective, and aesthetic† (University of Florida, n.d., pp. 1-2). Having personally experienced living in various countries, such as Italy, Australia, the UK, and Canada, the desire to learn more about the four major anthropological fields (archaeological, biological, linguistic, and socio-cultural anthropology) kept my interest aflame. As initially propelled by the impetus to pursue the Ph.D. program in Anthropology, my research on â€Å"Shifting Perceptions of Gender, Sexuality and Identity among Italian Immigrants in Vancouver† led me to identify my research aim to explore the shifting perceptions on issues of gender, sexuality and identity these young people may have in contrast to the earlier generations. Through the research, appropriate investigations are proposed to be made to address whether younger Italians might be affected with limiting and more conservative views on issues of gender roles and sexual identities. Attached is a copy of the Doctoral Research Prospectus for the admission committee’s perusal. The successful completion of this research would highly depend on the University of British Columbia’s approval of one’s application. I am very much interested to pursue the program as part of my long term commitment to be an instrumental contributor to improving the lives of c ontemporary generation through a determination of significant factors that affect human existence across a global scale. Through the developments accorded by advancement in technology and communication, various sources of information could be sourced readily and validated through electronic means. These developments’ influence and impact on the lives of people are interesting and
